Salina Area United Way BOLD Goal #3-Health
Increase the number of youth and adults who are healthy and avoiding risky behavior
In November of 2014, the Board of Directors of SAUW adopted three bold goals in the areas of Education, Income and Health. While all three are equally important, it is hard to deny that each goal has the potential to play a large role in the success of the others. It has been proven that those who successfully graduate from high school tend to be much more financially stable. Families who lead healthy, active lives tend to graduate from high school and go on to further their education. Individuals who are financially literate and stable appear to have fewer long-term, irreversible health issues.
There are many programs and partnerships in our community that are working hard to increase the health of our citizens. Salina Family Healthcare Center is working to reduce the number of children who are born at low birth weight. United Cerebral Palsy works diligently with their partners to help those who are in need secure assistive technology or medical equipment. CKF and The Pathfinder Recovery Center work with the Salina Regional Health Center to eliminate barriers to long term recovery from substance abuse. The local chapter of the American Red Cross continues to enroll business members in their Ready Rating program in order for them to be prepared in times of disaster. As you can see, every one of these programs and agencies is working to make our community a healthier place.
My question for you is: What are YOU doing to be healthy? While we are so fortunate to have these fantastic programs for those in need, our community’s health is ultimately up to each of us. Will you resolve to be active for 15 more minutes each day? Will your family eat another meal together loaded with local, fresh foods? Will you speak up and support initiatives that make Salina more connected and accessible? It is up to you…
